WAEC Debunks Rumours of English Language Examination Cancellation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has firmly refuted a false press release currently circulating on various social media platforms, which claims that the English Language examination written on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates has been cancelled. The said announcement, dated Friday, May 30, 2025, also falsely claimed that a new date for the examination would be announced soon.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, by the Council’s Public Affairs Department and signed by Moyosola Adesina, anipr, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC made it clear that the press release being widely shared did not emanate from the Council. The Council categorically stated that the English Language examination has not been cancelled and that no such decision was made.

WAEC expressed concern that the misleading information is likely being spread by individuals with malicious intent to discredit the Council and create confusion and panic among candidates who have already written the examination. The source of the false information is currently unknown, but the Council is certain that it was the handiwork of mischief-makers determined to bring the organisation into disrepute.

The Council used the opportunity to remind the general public, candidates, parents, and other stakeholders that all authentic information from WAEC is disseminated through its official and verified social media handles and accredited media platforms across Nigeria. Furthermore, the Council emphasised that all legitimate press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.

WAEC expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their continued trust and support over the past seventy-three years of conducting examinations. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding its legacy of excellence and pledged to continue exploring innovative ways to provide quality services to the Nigerian child.

The statement was issued from the WAEC office in Yaba, Lagos, and signed by Moyosola Adesina, anipr, Acting Head of Public Affairs, on behalf of the Head of National Office.
