MINISTRY OF PHYSICAL PLANNING HIGHLIGHTS FLOODING ISSUES AT WORLD HABITAT DAY CELEBRATION

Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, today marks World Habitat Day Celebration with the theme, “Urban Crisis Response: Flooding in Focus.” The event brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss innovative and collaborative strategies for addressing the growing challenges of urban development, particularly those related to flooding and environmental resilience.

Prof. Grace Oloukoi, Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Management, Lead City University, Ibadan was interviewed by Seun Fakoya the publisher of The Eye News on the growing challenges of urban developments. In her words she said “My research area has been water within environmental system, I look at water as a resource, water as a service and water as a management body ; which everybody must come together to work on” . ” I look at water and health, water and women, water and children and water and work”.

“Our response to urban crisis now should no more be reactionary but rather protect it”. “That is, we should not be responding when the disaster has happened but rather we should plan ahead that what if it happens and we should plan with the worst scenario it might”. “Not that oh it comes every day yes no more, now it’s coming to us almost every year so we should plan with the ability to say that do not allow it to happen, which is better and safer, it is also sustainable”.
